"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV

What incredible truth is in these two verses of Scripture! Followers of Jesus today are surrounded by a host of heavenly witnesses. The men and women of faith who have gone to heaven before us, are beckoning us to run the race of faith, to throw aside those sins that easily entrap us, those distractions that very subtly keep us from living with all-out focus on our Lord Jesus.

As followers of Jesus, we are commanded (not invited) in Scripture to look to Him, to focus intently and purposefully on who He is, the One who: 1) is the very cornerstone of our faith, 2) continues to perfect our faith, and 3) is maturing us in Him. So, with joy, let's run the race God has marked out for us. He has called and equipped us to run with joy although it probably will not be easy. At times it will be difficult, filled with hardship and even suffering. But let's remember, the race we are in is not a Spiritual Sprint, but it is a life-time Marathon of Endurance!

Jesus, Himself, is our example! He endured the beatings, shame, reproach and the cross. Yet, He was victorious and now sits along side the throne of the Father interceding for us who await His return.

Let us look to Jesus and war against sin all the time as we run our spiritual marathon, seeking to crown Jesus Lord in our lives!

I trust you experience encouragement in your faith journey to run your race with perseverance and joy. Trust God for His grace to cast off every sin and distraction to run without any encumbrance to win. It will take obedience to His Word and submission to the Holy Spirit!

So, to what degree and with what resources are you running to win your spiritual race?
